Waco, Texas is a mostly sleepy place, where the population consists of 125,000 or so brave, acclimated to the heat souls, and the town sprawls sweating along the shimmering Brazos river on the I35 corridor, about halfway between Austin and Dallas. It is notable, if at all, as the place where the famous Brach Davidian/ATF struggle took place in agonizing detail on television. Ted Nugent lives there. Once, during George W. Bush’s presidency, it was designated as the home of the White House press corps, for times when Bush would reside at his “western” White House, in Crawford, Texas. It is also home of Baylor University.
Baylor University is of course the alma mater of Robert Griffin III, currently quarterback for the Washington Redskins, who vowed at the end of mini-camp to keep synchronizing the fine points of coach Shanahan’s offense with his receivers in the five weeks or so between mini camp ending and training camp starting on July 25. Offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan famously said around the same time that he doesn’t care who Griffin throws the ball to, he needs reps and more reps. Well, Kyle should be pleased.
“We knew we needed to get together,” Griffin told reporters at the NFL’s rookie symposium on Thursday. “We got workout facilities and everything. Shockingly, I convinced them to come to Waco, Texas, because not everybody wants to do that.”
Along with receivers Santana Moss, Brandon Banks, Pierre Garcon, Anthony Armstrong, and tight end Fred Davis, Griffin led what has been described as an informal passing camp on Friday, presumably at Baylor facilities.
The list of receivers is almost as notable for who did not attend as for those who did. Was Cooley teaching a pottery class he couldn’t get out of? Where was Terrence Austin? For that matter, were Cousins and Grossman invited? These are questions that remain unanswered at this point. More will be revealed in the coming days, but at least the group missed the record temperatures and loss of power in the DMV. Who knows, with all that’s going on weather-wise, maybe they’ll decide to stay for awhile.
